Kimolos
back

Kimolos is pentagon-shaped and is located between islands Milos and Sifnos. It covers an area of 37 square km while the length of its coasts is 38 km. It is a volcanic island with a vast variety of rocks, the main being cimolite (chalk) which also gives its name to the island. The extraction of cimolite has been a source of revenue for the island ever since antiquity.

Northwest Kimolos and Polyaigos, as well as the sea area around them have been part of the NATURA 2000 network of Europe’s most ecologically  important areas. It is one of the most important natural habitats and breeding grounds of the Mediterranean Monk Seal worldwide. Numerous seaside caves are formed in the coasts between the two islands that act as a resort for the species. In ten of them, regular breeding activity is recorded.

Many inhabitants are preoccupied with navigation, agriculture and extraction of chalk. Tourism has recently begun to develop but the island is not mainstream yet and offers plenty of peace and quiet.

The Castle of Kimolos, the churches, the snow-white residences, the cobblestone alleys and the serene beaches are the island’s trademarks
