Lefkada
back

Lekfas (or Lefkada) is one of the renowned 'Eptanissa' islands, the seven islands of the Ionian Sea. The distance from the coasts of Aitoloakarnania is only 78 m and the island is connected to the mainland with a navigable bridge. Lefkada is 35 km long and 15 km wide. Along with the nearby islands, Meganisi, Kalamos, Skorpios, Madouri, etc., it consists the Prefecture of Lefkada.

Lefkas never had any permanent natural connection with the mainland. The shingle spit at the northern tip was pierced in ancient times by the Corinthians to provide a channel for shipping, much like the spit to the south of Lefkas town, which came into being in the Middle Ages as a result of the establishment of salt-pans.
Off the south-east coast of Lefkas is the beautiful unspoilt island of Meganisi, with sandy beaches and famous sea-caves and therefore a exquisite area for relaxed family yacht charters, either bareboat, in flotilla or skippered. The must-see ports and anchorages include: Palairos, Mytika, Kastos, Port Leone, Episkopi, Papanikolis Cave, Vathi, Spartakhori, Menidion (Ambracian Gulf), Sivota, Vasiliki and Rouda Bay.

Lefkada took its name from the white colour (lefko in Greek) of the rocks in cape Lefkatas. Excavations had brought to light finds from the Palaeolithic Age. There are also finds from the Neolithic Age. The Lefkadians were allies of the Corinthians and took part in the naval battle of Salamina in 480 BC. They also took part in the Peloponnesian War as allies of the Corinthians again. In 235 BC Lefkas became the main city of the 'Acarnanian League'.

Later, the Romans took over the island and did important public works: bridges, temples, theatres, etc. There are no written sources from the Byzantine period. Later, Eptanissa came under the authority of the Venetians and after short intervals of the Turks for180 years, a very difficult period for the islanders and all the Greeks in general. In 1684 the island came once again under the authority of the Venetians and then the French, the Russians and the British followed. In 1864 Eptanissa were integrated into free Greece.

In the 70's, after a difficult period of wars, the island begins to flourish in tourism. Today, it is a well-known destination and attracts tourists from all over the world. A famed festival takes places in the summertime in Lefkas.
