Syros
back

Syros (or Syra) is the commercial, administrative and cultural center of the Cyclades.
Due to the long standing presence of Western cultures, the islands of Syros and Tinos were the bulwark of Catholicism in Greece. Syros was once the largest port in Greece (before the commercial development of the port of Piraeus) and one of the richest and most powerful in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Archaeological excavations on the island brought to light many findings from the Cycladic Civilisation (2,800–2,300 BC).

The island has a good road network and can be explored by car or bicycle. Buses run regularly connecting Ermoupolis to the beaches and villages of the island.
Syros is characterised for its traditional beauty and tranquility. The Cycladic mentality, natural beauty and historical monuments make Syros the ideal place for a holiday destination.
By exploring Syros, apart from Ermoupolis which is considered one of the most beautiful and authentic cities in Greece, one will find beautiful settlements such as the tourist resorts of Azolimnos, Galissas, the seaside village of Poseidonia (or Delagratsia), Foinikas, Kini, Megas Gialos Vari, Ano Syros and many more settlements and villages with wonderful beaches and traditional sights

You can visit all the neighbouring islands of the Cyclades from Syros, as well as Astypalea, Rhodes, Karpathos, Crete, Chalkida, Skiathos and Thessalonica.
Taste the traditional sweet "loukoumi" (photo), halvapie (chalvadopita), small rocks (vrachakia), masticha and the marzipans!
If you order "little fish" (psaraki) don`t expect to eat fish. The syrians call the beef like that...
Visit the Museums and the culture centers of the island. Leave rich of ancient hellenic knowledge and high aesthetics.
"Karavoli" is the word that syrians use for the snails that they cook with tomato and aroma from sage.
